[by telegraph.—own correspondent.] The Vincent Cases.
Auckland, Monday Night. At the Supreme Court to-day, the charge of forcible entry at Hamilton East against Augustus Vincent, Mary Vincent, and George Vincent was heard. The evidence was similar to that taken before the resident magistrate. Mr A. W. O'Neill, who called no witnesses for the defence, then made a forcible address to the jury on behalf of the prisoners. He contended that the man had a perfect right to break into his own house (here his Honour entirely disagreed with Mr O'Neill). The learned counsel then submitted to his Honour's notice a series of cases which he considered bore out his view of the case. These the court ruled had been over-ruled, and his Honour finally laid down the rule that no one had the right to obtain possession of his own house by forcible entry. His Honour then .summed up, pointing out that Mary Vincent, as the wife of the elder prisoner, must be acquitted, as she had acted under compulsion of her husband. The jury then, retiring, found Augustus Vincent guilty, and acquitted the others. His Honour fined Augustus Vincent £5, when he was released. ■ Mining Investment. A letter from England published by the Star states there has been a revival in mining investments, and a good prospect of Now Zealand companies being floated. The Samoan Land Case. The great Samoan land case, Mactiamara and others v. William McArthur and Co., has, it is reported, been finally . settled. Defendants applied for leave to appeal to the Privy Council against the decision of the High Commissioner's Court in favour of the plaintiffs. A private cable message received to day from London runs as follows : —"Appeal utterly quashed, with costs."
