LATEST WELLINGTON NEWS.

[by TELEGRAPH.—PRESS association.] Wellington, Monday. The court awarded £1100 in the Rhodes compensation case for land taken by the Government. Judge Richmond this morning suspended the discharge of three bankrupts for three months, not for any particular default, but, as he said, to discountenance debtors rushing into the Bankruptcy Court. It is understood that the rifle to be adopted by the Government will be a repeating one, of the Lee. pattern and with a 3.5 bore, The bullet used in this class of weapon to be adopted is said to be quite an original one, and is cased with steel. The advantage to be gained, is that the bullet is not flattened out or affected in the slightest degree on striking the object. Ic is also considered probable that a military board of five members will shortly be established in the colony, and that among the members will be the Defence Minister, Major General Whitmore, General Schaw and Major Boddam. Lieutenant Douglas will probably be appointed secretary to the board. Dr. Cole has withdrawn from contesting for the seat in Wellington. Major Atkinson will probably address a public meeting here this week. A slight shock of earthquake was experienced at 1 40 this afternoon, The tramway company's offices were broken into last night, and about £10 was stolen.
