THE ABATTOIR PETITION.

TO THK EDIfOK. Sir, —I was one who signed the petition about the .abattoirs, and am now sorry I done so. I will tell you how it was if you will give me space in your valuable paper. 1 was misled by the statements of the persons carrying , the petition round for signature, who told me and others that it was a scheme to enable the Mayor and a few of the council to lend the borough money to a few friends of gome well-to-do settlers, quite able to tind their own money t> go into business in the slaughtering line if they chose to do so, I now find that I have been had, and that the Borough Council has been acting in a strictly business way, and that these settlers, instead of having the money lent to them to carry on the business with, are simply to become b»rongh tenants, and that the money is to be spent by the borough in building the abattoirs and plant, which will continue to be the property of the borough. I now see that I have been cheated into signing somethins? quite different and would gladly sign a petition to say so if those who were misled with me would do the same, but I don't like to come forward alone and confess my folly, so I sign myself A Working Man. East Hamilton. P.S.—Some, I know, just signed it to spite the Borough Council for putting the cattle off the streets at night.
