RAGLAN.
A tejii'EUANCE meeting was held in the Wesleyan Church here on the evening of March 3rd, but owing to the wet weather at the time, not so large a company as usual attended. The chair was occupied by Mr Pegler, who opened the meeting by a few remarks, after which an attractive programme was gone through, consisting of recitations by Miss McDonald and others, solos sung by Mr and Mrs Stephenson, and duet by Mrs Stephenson and Miss Wallis, the latter lady presiding at the harmonium. Mr Stephenson gave a short address, bearing upon the sympathy we should show to those in distress and suffering from the evils of drink. Mr R. Philp also addressed the meeting upon the power of example, noticing the efforts of two or three gentlemen present in the meeting who had stuck to their colours for many years past. He trusted that we should do something outside these meetings to help on the good cause. After a vote of thanks to the ladies, the choir, and one to the chairman the meeting separated. Many visitors are still staying here, and seem to enjoy themselves with boating, etc. Mr and Mrs Lake arrived here on Thursr day night. They are staying a few days, returning early next week. At the monthly meeting of the Town of Raglan Highway Board hold last .Saturday, Mr Philips in the chair, several tenders for road works were considered, Mr Seal obtaining the work, A letter was received from the Whaingaroa Road Board upon the desirability of forming a harbour board under a section of the Counties Act of last session, which gives authority for highway board to unite for that purpose. It was decided to unite with the Whaingaroa Board for that purpose.—(Own Correspondent, Raglan, March 11th, 1887.)
