THE ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION OF THE REV. S. BAKER.
# SIX PERSONS SHOT. [BY TELEGRAPH.—COPYRIGHT.—REUTER. J Sydney, February 17.; The vessel Lubeck has arrived from Apia. She brings news from Tonga that six men, convicted of the attempted assassination of the Rev. S. Baker, Premier, were shot at Malona Island on 12th February, in the presence of the Crown Prince of Tonga and a number of natives. Two others who were implicated in the outrage have been remanded. Miss Baker, who was severely wounded, is not expected to recover. Mr Baker's son, however, is progressing towards recovery. Mr Baker himself is a guest at the King's palace, which is guarded by troops. Melbourne, February 17. The Argus to-day argues that Admiral Tryon should dispatch a warship to Tonga, and sarcastically remarks :—" No important event, such as the Melbourne Cup or a ball at Sydney, requires the presence of the whole of the officers of the squadron to be in Australian waters."
