THE JUBILEE SINGERS.
Thk public of Hamilton have rarely enjoyed such a musical treat as last night and, we are happy to say, showed their appreciation of it by crowding the Public Hall to its full capacity. In purity of tone and correctness of enunciation the^e singftrs may have their rivals in New Zealand, but for precision in part singing they defy competition. What struck us most forcibly was the wonderful sweetness and accuracy of the piano, and more particularly of the pianissimo, parts, so wonderfully contrasted in " The Band of Gideon" with the admirable precision of attaqne shown in the sudden change to fortissimo. The premier basso showed also to great advantage in about the only real hearty, and at the same time musical, laugh we have heard on the lyrical boards, and in the last piece on the first part of the programme, " I'm rolling through an unfriendly world," in which his enunciation of the leading motif evoked aa much amusement as it evinced perfect command of his vocal organs. In the second part, by special desire, " John Brown " was substituted for another piece announced, and by its pathos much affected the feelings of the audience, most of whom had been previously acquainted with it through the medium of metaHymposial melodies at cricket or football dinners. Many, however, thought that the Lord's Prayer at the commencement was, regarded strictly in a musical light, the gem of the performance. In conclusion, we have to thank the FUk University Singers for a unique musical treat, and we earnestly recommend all who can afford it to take a second chance of hearing them to-night at Cdmbiidge, with a new programme. _____________^^_
