THE CHRISTMAS CARNIVAL

Thk arrangements for the grand Christmas Carnival at Hamilton in connection with the Church of S. Peter are now in a very forward state, and there cannot be a doubt that on the appointed days all will go smoothly and well. No one outside the charmed circle of the executive committee can form any conception of the enormous amount of work entailed in tho preparation and arrangement of the material, the rehearsal of tin dramatic and musical portions of the programme, to say nothing of the business pait of the aff.iir. When it is considered that about 200 people, old and young, are engaged in one \va,y or another, the magnitude of the undertaking will be apparent. Mr Swarbrick, who occupies the post of director-general of the whole, so to speak, i* at present tho most hard-worked man in Hamilton. He is simply übiquitous. His energy and perseverance are beyond all praise. He has, moreover, infused his spirit into those who immediately surround him, whose industry i8 scarcely less remarkable than his. The painted fasades of the various houses which are to form the, street, the decorations .and appointments of tho hall, the making of the costumes, the collection and arrangement of the numberless articles of virtu and bijouterie, and everything connected with the Fair is being done by Mr Swarbrick and his devoted b.ind of assistants, the chief of whom are of the gentler sex. The musical department is under the direction of a well-known enthusiast, who will leave no stone unturned to achieve success. Daily rehearsals of the may-pole dance and the pantomime are now going on, and those who are in a position to speak authoritatively say the juvenile performers are fast approaching perfection. The idea of the costume cricket match, which was not included in tho original programme, has been very heartily taken up, «-vnd this item promises to be not the least amusing, at any rate, in the list.
