CRICKET. Hamilton v. Paterangi

Thk return match between the above clubs took place in Mr Germann's paddock, Paterangi, on Saturday last, and resulted in a win for the local team by five wickets. Mr Crookes winning the toss elected to field. The first three wickets realised only 19, but worse was in store for Hamilton, as the remaining seven wickets added only four runs, including a three hit by Mr Yon Stunner. Paterangi were a trifle better, making 3t in their first venture. After lunch Hamilton made their second essay, but failed to make more than 41, of which Mr Murray claimed 13, not out, the only double figure as yet on either side, and more than any other Hamilton batsman secured in his double venture. With 34 required to win, the match looked very healthy for Paterangi, though there was as yet no reason for their opponents to despair ; still less when three batsmen were dismissed for one, and four for eight runs. Messrs Crookes and Richdale however, completely altered the complexion of affairs, putting on 25 before the latter was bowled for 12. The next ball gave Mr Mercer the winning hit, and Mr Crookes was not out with 10 to his credit. The bowling analysis reads as follows in the double innings of each side :— For Hamilton : Mr Byng, 96 balls, 10 maidens, 3 wickets, for 23 runs ; Mr Yon Stunner, 125 balls, 15 maidens, 9 wickets, for 21 runs and 1 wide; Mr Barton, 45 balls, 4 maiden*, 1 wicket, for 8 runs ; Mr Bindon, 7 balls, 1 maiden, 1 wicket, for 7 runs. Messrs Crookes and McFarlane shared the Paterangi bowling with the following results: Mr Cookes 119 balls, 12 maidens, 8 wickets, for 2G runs ; Mr McFarlane, 111 balls, 8 maidens, 12 wickets for 2G runs. Tuhikaramea play Hamilton on Sydney Square on Saturday next, starting at 10 o'clock, the names of the Hamilton team will be published in our next issue. On the two following Saturdays, it is proposed to play a match between Hamilton East and West, starting at 2 o'clock each afternoon.
