HAWERA, Friday. A man named .J. D. McLean,carpenter, was arrested this morning on a charge of being in possession of a gun, with an unlawful intent, he presented the gun at Mr Iredalc, a farmer, last evening, but then said that he hid made a mistake, it was a brother of Iredale's for whom he was looking, and when he found him he would shoot him. The prisoner was lemanded till Wednesday.
FIELDING, Friday. John Derby, a settler, at Bunnythorpe was lulled at 9 o'clock this morning in Mansion's section, Taonui road by the fall, ing of a tree.
WELLINGTON, Thursday. The City Council half-yearly accounts show a balance, £2000, of levenue over expenditure. Mi* Hart Ady lias been returned Mayor of Greytown unopposed. A man named Nicholson, who was thrown out of a buggy at Masterton a tew montliB ago, has succumbed to his injuries. A boy named William Searancke living at upper Hutt, was pricking a dynamite cap with a pin, when it suddenly exploded, blowing away four of his fingers and severely injuring his face.
CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. Sir J. Vogel has received a telegram from the Agent (General, conveying the following information. The position of the Imperial Institute has suddenly changed, the Prince of Wales has now decided that theie shall be no re-opening in June next, and that the new committee cannot receive exhibits. I am therefoie making temporary arrangerangements until I receive instructions. I po?t by mail to day all the information necessary, to enable tiie Government to ome to a decision.
TIMARU, Thursday. A splendid specimen of Califoruian salmon was caught in the harbour last night by a young man catching herrings fiom a shoal, with a lauding net. The ribh weighed six pounds, and was twentysix inches in length.
DUNEDIN". Thursday, Srwi.uel Collon, a man employed as stoker on an engine woiking at the Otago Heads, was to-day charged at the Police Court with giving tobacco to a prisoner contrary to sec'ion 33 of the Prison Act. The gaoler said a quantity of tobacco had been found in possession of prisoners, but they had been hitherto unable to discover how it was obtained. The accuse*! admitted the charge. The Resident Magistrate said that although it waa a first offence it could not be dealt with lightly, and inflicted a fine of £•">. A further charge against the accused, of conveying a lettei from one of the prisoners, was dismissed on technical grounds.
