CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH ELECTION. TO THE EDITOR.

Silt, — As I seldom trouble you with any correspondence I trust you will find room for a few words in re the present municipal "dead lock" in Cambridge: — Several letters, pro and con, have appeared from the would-bo Mayor " and councillors " and " large ratepayers," but it is not always the largest ratepayers who are the fittest for municipal honours. I may say I am a large property owner myself, but perhaps like many others (who are boasting of their being large ratepayers,) mortgaged up to the neck. And looking back at the events of the past few months I find that Meßsrs Houghton, Hewitt, Wells, and Russell strove might and main to get Cambridge proclaimed a borough, then a month afterwards when it is proclaimed, the same individuals are moving heaven and earth to prevent their own handiwork from being carried out, because they find they are not likely to have the reins in their own handi under the new Act, as they have had in the past. Who and what are these men? Cambridge did not know them, or they Cambridge, a very few years back ; and now they would like to dictate to us all. — I am, yours, Cockatoo. [Some portions of our correspondent's letter have been omitted, as being of too personal a nature to be admitted into an anonymous communication. — Ed.J
