M. r0 Hay wrote asking for certain information a *j respecting work which was necessary bo- ~ fore he could give his opinion. —The Mayor ", c said it was necessary to have a ll ~ legal committee to take such matters S' as this into consideration. — Cr. °* Yon Stunner thought a x special n " committee should be appointed, consisting n of tho oldest residents. If they appointed n ' a legal committee, it might consist of )n gentlemen who had no special knowledge of *> such matters as that under notice.— Cr. 1" Knox said a legal commit f/cef /ce was necessary, as they could easily get the necessary legal M? assistance. — Cr. Yon Stunner moved that 'd the committee consist of Crs. Knox, Edge- !" cumbe, Tippen, Jones, and the mover, to •• report on the matter. — Cr. Knox said 'y there were many matters winch should '£> not be discussed in public, and such a coind inittee was highly necessary. The motion '■ was duly seconded and catricd. Tippen ob18 jected, as the Department had plenty of *'• timber and could do it themselves. The ?t council had refused several application* of m this kind.— Cr. Knox said it was the duty j° of the council to give everyone an ap- *• proach to his property. He moved that the 18 matter be left in the hands of the Works '" Committee.— Seconded by Cr. Kdgecumbe d and carried. >f A Complaint.— Mr W. Wood wrote, !s complaining that much damage had been •' done to his garden in Coilinifwood-street, " owing to the defective drainage of the said '• street. — Tho letter was referred to the : - Works Committee with power to act. lfc Gravel Contract.— Mr J. Coombes, >" gravel contractor, wrote asking the council c to consider his case, he having had tocirt >" the gravel from the East side, in conse 11 quence of the West pit having given out. — 1 (!)u the motion of Cr. Campbell, £2 18s r lOd ; D. Elliott, 6s ; T. G. Saudes, £5 5s ; i The Waikato Times, £3 3s. Election of Committees.— The foliowr ing committees were appointed : — Works 1 Committee : Crs. Tippen (chairman), Dey " and Edgecumbe (re-elected). — In moving 3 the appointment of Cr. Tippen as chair- • man, Cr. Knox paid that gentleman a hijrh " compliment for the manner in whioh he had • carried out the duties of his office. He r moved that the thanks of thi» council be f conveyed to Gr. Tippen. — This was 1 seconded by Cr, Jones, and carried unani1 mously.— Finance Committee: The whole 1 council ; Legal Committee (standing) ; The " whole council, three to form a quorum. Cr. • Edgeoumbe was appointed chairman. 1 Borouoh Valuation. — Ie was decided to invite tenders for the office of valuator, at a remuneration of £20. — Cr. Knox said it was necessary that tho council should have a permauent valuator, who could take note of the improvements &c, effected, from time to time. He thought the valuator appointed this year 1 ahoqld hold office during good behaviour. He did not think the sum named was ; sufficient— Cr. Knox'a suggestion was agreed to. 1 Thk Mvyour-s' Cr\dle.— The Mayor havmjf retired, the chair was taken by Cr. lvno\. The committee reported recommending that thn sum of £20 be granted to purchase a silver cradle for the A^Jiyoross. Tho report was recje.ivQd and adopted unanimously, and tho oommittee. with the addition of Cr. Knox, were authorised to procure the cradle. The Triangle Reserve.— Cr. Edgecumbe said that, owing to the ab.-ence of Cr. Scott, the committee appointed to report on the work necessary to be dono on thi> reserve, at the corner of Victoria and Graqtham-streets, was not ready. — Cr. Knox said it would bo a pity to defer the matter for .mother month. — Cr. Edgecumbe said the cemmittee wished to include that portion of Knox-street on the east side of Victoria-street. — On the suggestion of Cr. Knox, Cr. Edgecumbe gave notice to move that the necessary steps be taken to close the portion of Knox-street indicated. The Pound.— The pound keeper forwarded an account for £3 18s .3d, balance of fees due to him.— Cr. Tippe-i said if the ' pound was going to cost them money, they had better close it. — Several councillors ' agreed with this, and on the motion of Cr. ; Edgecumbe, it was resolved that the clerk ' compare accounts with the poundkeeper and report to the council. ' t Thk Abbvtoius. — The Mayor took occa- : sion to remind the councillors that a meet- i inu would be held on Wednesday (to- ] morrow) morning, for the purpose of dis- ( cussing the question of the proposed I abbatoirs with a number of country settlers, f who had b'en invited to attend. l Cattle on the Streets.— Cr. Kuov ' moved that notice be inserted in The Wai- ( kato Times, iuti'nating that at the expira- ° turn of seven days all cattle found at I large on the streets will be impounded. I He pointed out that the Kinkiriroa Road l Board hail taken tho load and they ought J to follow. Like the Chinese, the cattle c in the streets " inu»t go." — Cr. Yon Stunner seconded the resolution. He ' thought something ought to be done, and 1 that quickly, to gat rid of the cattle nuisance. If the oounoil did nothing 1 he j would take the law into his own hands. — * Cr. Jones thought Cr. Knoxs motion c was rather hard. He would move the action be left m abeyance until the j. commonages wero fenced in.— Cr. Edge- *- cumbe seconded the amendment. — Crs. Dey and Tippen deprecated hasty action. — Cr. Knox .said he should certainly put the law " into operation if the council neglected to take action.— The Mayor said tenders for a fencing the commonages were to be con- -^ sidered that evening. He certainly under- °J stood that the council had decided to wait " until the commonages were fenced be fore turning the cattle off the streets. — Cr. Barton agreed with this. — Cr. Kno\ n did not approve of the commonages, nor did Mr Ballance. If he did not got support from the council the Government would S support him in his effort to prevent such t( large blocks of land being locked up. — For d tho amendment there voted all the coun- s \ cillors except Cr. Knox. Tho amendment q was therefore carried. — Cr. Knox said he would see that the law was carried out ™ before next meeting.
