HAMILTON IMPROVEMENTS. The Mayor's Visit to Auckland.
His Worship the Mayor of Hamilton (Mr W. A. Graham) had a very satisfactory interview with the MinUter of Lands at Auckland on Thursday. Mr Graham, writing to Hamilton, says Mr Ballance received him very courteously and gavo great attention to the matters brought under his notice. He was especially gratified at the success of the borough and domain improvement and leasing scheme inaugurated some time since. He accepted the fact as a guarantee of the good faith actuating the borough in making the former application for Government reserves which he was so instrumental in procuring for us. Regarding the fresh application, he desired the M.iyor to forward a complete list of the sections still in the hands of the Government, when he will recommend that all except those required for Government purposes be handed over to th« domain board. He promised to see that the site for the abattoirs is phiced at the disposal of the borough. Mr Ballance a^iuvd Mr Gr.iham ot his cordial suppoit in the matter of railway leform. He is strongly of opinion that the railw.iys should bo run in tho interests of settlement. Mr Graham mentioned the commonnge scheme, but this did not meet with Mr Ballance's approval. He thinks the borough would do bettor by cutting up the land and letting it in moderate si/.ed allotments on the improvement lease system. Mr Ballance intends visiting the Waikato i?i December, when he will afford the Mayor ;u other opportunity of conversing with him on matters affecting the welfare of the, town. Mr Graham also states that ho will see Mr Percy Smith and Mr Coom, Resident Railway Enginoer, with reference to getting lind for a road to the proposed abattoirs. Mr Ballanco quite approves of the idea, and there does not appear to be any likelihood of the application being rejected.
