INS AND OUTS OF HORSERACING.
Racing is a funny little game, and this was exemplified at a merting held not 1000 miles from Melbourne a short time ago. The story goes that in a particular race a certain party had arranged with a jockey who was to lose ; but one of the fraternity who fancied the horse, and was supposed to be in the confidence of the jockey, promised him £100 if he won. The jockey agreed, and his friend backed his horse with spirit. The h»>rse won easily, and the puller of the strings who had arranged that it should be stopped looked unutterable things, while the other was all smiles. On settling with the jockey, however, instead of paying him £100 as promised, he, the second robber, gave him only £50. The jocked protested, but in vain ; yet he had his revenge, for the horse shortly afterwards started again, and Robber No. 2, who imagined he could rely upon his jockey friend, came to an agreement that he was to lose, and he was to share in the plunder, which would be pretty considerable, inasmuch as the animal was a red hot favourite. The jockey, however, had not forgotten a previous transaction, and instead of performing the Armstrong trick lie allowed his charge to gallop horns the easiest of winners. Robber No. 2 is now deploring the base ingratitude and unstahledess of humanity in general, and jockeydom in particular.
