Too Poor to Marbv.— Recently at the Liverpool Sheriff's Court, a jury isat to assess tho damages in an action for breach of promise brought by Margaret Lloyd, of Liverpool, against 'Adam Hall, of St. Anne's-on-Sea. The paities met in 1875, while the plaintiff was on a visit to some friends at Bury, where the, defendant also had some of his connections. During their courtship about 500 letteis were written by the defendant. Some of these, which were of a most affectionate description, were read in court. Two years after their engagement he asked to be released, but plaintiff declined.— The jury awarded the plaintiff £900 damages. It is the intention of the Te Awdmutu Town Board, at their next meeting on the 2nd August, to strike a rate of three-farthing in the £ on all ratable property, for the y«>ar ending 31st March, 18^7 An estimate of the proposed expenditure for the same period has been prepared, and is open tor inspection at tho office of tho Board.
