TE AROHA.

[fc'ROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Tk Auoha, Friday. A wiifii attended meeting of the inhabitants was held in the Public Hall on Wednesday evening to consider various matters relating to the welfa-ie of the district. The chair was occupied by Mr James Mills, chairman of the Improvements Committee, who, at the request of that body, had convened the meeting in order that a definite expression of opinion might be given by the residents upon the questions to be discussed. The tirst subject brought forward was tlie necessity for making «i» effoit to get of tho public works which aie of importance to the district carried out as early as possible, and by a unanimous vote it was resolved that the following brief petition be forwarded to the Minister foy Public Works: " We, the inhabitants of Te Aroha and neighbourhood, m public mepting assembled, respectfully request that you will be pleaded to take into consideration the nooes>->ity for commencing the construction of a section of tho Te Aioha and Thames railway at thoTe Aioh.i end of that line, in order that work may be found for a large number of persons who are at present unemployed. We would .also respectfully urge upon you the desirability of opening up without further delay direct communication for wheel traffic between Te Aroha and Tauranga." The second question considered was whether the bvying of a separate rate by the Piako County Council should or should not be opposed, and the following resolution was carried by a large majority :—": — " That the inhabitants of Te Aroha, having definitely resolved upon forming a borough, the Piako County Council be requested to levy no more rates in this riding." A somewhat animated debate, flavoured with a faint spice of acrimony, followed upon the introduction of the third subject, the discussion of which was taken part in by several Waiorongomai residents, some of whwm fancied that the wording of the motion submitted to the meeting, with reference to the steps to be taken m forming the proposed borough, was inteuded as a slight to the residents of their part of the district. The Chairman explained that nothing of the kind was meant by the framers of the resolution, but as the meeting had been called for the purpose of eliciting the opinions of the Aroha people alone he ht»d to request that ou the motion being put those persons who wete present from Waiorongomai would abstain from \oting. The motion, which was as follows: — "That the Improvements Committee take immediate steps to have the township incorporated under the new Municipal Corporations Act, either with or without Waiorongomai," was then put and' earned without dissent. In the expectation of a largo increase of business during the coming season Messrs Bradley and Ferguson are now making e.\tensh c additions to their livery and coaching establishment. The new buildings will comprise a stable 52 feet by 30, carnage shed, harness room, and offices, and when completed will be a credit to the spirited proprietors. As soon as everything is in readiness it is the intention of the firm to establi&h periodical horse sales. A dense white cloud, as of steam, was visible rising over the range in the direction of Rotorua all yesterday afternoon. From its appearance it is conjectured that the ! subterranean forces in that quarter have burst into fresh activity. i The new Anglican Church is now almost completed. The contractor hopes to have all the interior fittings finished in a week or ten days, and immediately thereafter the ceremony of consecration is expected to take place.
