THE GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE.
[by telegiuph.— press association;] Chhistchubch, Wednesday. The New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase, which takes place to- morrow, is attracting a large number of visitors from various parts of the Island, and a fair amount of interest is being taken in the races. The betting on the Grand National Steeplechase has somewhat livened up, and business has been transacted at the following quotations :— 5O to 20 agst. Faugh-a-Ballagh (taken); 30 to 10 agst. Canard (taken); 40 to 10 agst. Peter Osbeck (taken) ; 00 to 10 against Michael Scott (taken) ; IJO to 10 agst. Secretary (off) ; 70 to 10 agst. Aroha (off); 100 to 10 agst. Victor (taken and off. )
An Equine Census. —A register of every horse and mule in France is kept by the Government for reference in case of war. when the Government may need to call lor horaes.
