Mr Guuiam Bekbv, Agent-General for Victom, had an interview with the Secretary of State for tlio Colonw inleferunce to thfl New Hebrides Lord Gi. m ville assured him that Her Majesty* Govcinmunt would act in conformity with the wishes of the colonies in the matter, and e\ pi cued himself anxious concerning tho ultimate settlement of the reculiviste difficulty. Mr Gr.iham Berry has leceived satisfactory assurances re the New Hebrides from Lord Granvillo, and has wired details to his Uoverument. Mr JJerry told Lord Granvilln thut it would be unfair to require the coltnip-i to again define their requests, .11 the hottled attitude of their Governments was arousing French enmity. Lord Granville, in reply to Mr Berry, 'implied that it would be a palpable error to accept the extended proposals of France. He further stated tint in the first instance he only suggested that a cession of the Now Hebrides convict question, and several other points. Lords Roseberry and Granville fear that the action taken by their Government will have the effect of re-open-ing the recidiviste question.
