Heavy continuous rain lias fallen in this district during the past twenty-four hours. The Man.iwatn river at the Gorge ferry hridge has risen to nearly 30ft. The usual average height is 6ft. It is still rising. The wire and posts at the ferry were carried away, and no communication even by boat is possible. Traffic is (suspended, and the mails are delayed. FIELDING, Monday.
A shock of earthquake was felt here yesterday morning at fonr o'clock. The heavy rain caused floods in the Makiniorua river, and the approaches to the Awahuri bridge at Fielding are now washiug away, and the traffic is stopped. INVERCARGILL. Monday. The Junction Hotel was destroyed by fire at four o'clock this morning. The building was insured for £550 in the New Zealand office, for £250 in the Phoenix Company, and for about £250 in the Victoria.
