THE STEAMER TAUPO ASHORE NEAR GISBORNE.

[BY TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Gisbobne, Wednesday. Thk Taupo, Capt. McColl, from Napier to Gixborne, ' with seven passengers, Messrs Rohemray, Churton, Scully, Constables Loonard and Whit«, and about 500 tons of cargo, went ashore at 1.30 a.m. on the rocks, 2£ miles eastward of Gisborne. The weather at the time was 6ne, although it was rathor a dark niifht. The sea was smooth. As soon as the vessel struck rockets were sent up at once. They were observed, and preparations were made for going to the vessel* assistance. Meanwhile the Rosina, on her passage to Tologa Bay had also seen rockets, and returned to the Taupo'a assistance. The Rouina, with one passenger and one of a crew, steamed t» Gisborne and tm>k off the Collector of Customs and the Har-bour-master, who had been making preparations to proceed to the wreck. The Taupo was found lying on a reef, the same as that touched by the Te Anau some time ago. The sea being perfectly smooth thsre was no excitement or danger to life. Preparations were at once made, the anchors carried out and lighters sent off to get the cargo discharged. The amount of damage cannot yet be ascertained. After discharging about 100 tons of cargo, at 11 a.m. an attempt was made to get the Taupo off, which was successful, and the steamer started for Napier for an overhaul, steaming fairly well, with one blade of her propeller crippled.
