NATIVE OBSTRUCTION TO SURVEY AT MAUNOATAUTARI. PULLING UP THE PEGS. Mr. Sandes Determined. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Kihikihi, Monday Night.
The surveyor, Mr Sandes, having staited to survey the sub-division of MaungatauUri Block, the natives have offered determined obstruction, claiming the land as held under Tawhiao's jurisdiction. The trigs erected are pulled down, flags taken up, and natives have threatened to take the theodolite if the survey proceeds. Mr McDonald, the "white chief," was present, and cautioned the natives not to break the law. The survey being authorised by the Assistant SurveyorGeneral, it is hoped he will insist on the opposition being stopped, and the obstructors punished. The surveyor is determined to proceed with the work and carry it out. The Government agent, Mr G. T. Wilkinson, has been communicated with.
