MR BALLANCE AND THE NATIVES.

iBT TK.KJBAFH.— OWN CORRKSPOKnBNT.I Auckland, Monday- Night. Mk Ballance had an interesting interview with Taonui to-day. He was visited at the native office by a delegation of chiefs, which came, down 'from Tawhiao in see the Governor. They protect strongly ' against surveys going on at Kawhia. Mr Ballance said what had occurred was exactly what Tawhiao's indisposition to communicate. with the Government in a friendly way must lead to. The chiefs assented to this. Mr Ballance went on to say that the Government hearing nothing from Tawhiao regarding the survey, and application having been made by European owners, they had ordered the survey to be commenced, and it was now bound to proceed. If Tawhiao had had any application to moke it would have been listened to very respectfully. The ohiefs gave Mr Ballance a pressing invitation to visit Whatiwhatihoe, and stay two or three day*, to see Tawhiao. Mr Ballance replied that he was going on to' Alexandra this week, and had invited Tawhiao and Te Wheoro to meet him there, but had not received any reply. At noon Mr Ballance took Taonui and Ropata to Government House, and introduced them to the Governor, who bad a long and interesting conversation with them. Taonui expressed great pleasure at seeing the Governor. Ropata said he was the second Governor he had seen. Mr Ballance was interviewed this afternoon by Sydney Tai whang* and his brother, re a block of 5000 acres in which be hai*tt interest They wish the Government to buy it. Mr Ballance leaven to-morrow for Waikato to meet the chiefs re their lands, and returns on Thursday, and leave* immediately for Tauranga and Past Coast.
