THE WHATIWHATIHOE MEETING.

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. 1 Alexandra, April 11th, 1886. Tawhiao's or rather Major Te WheoroV meeting h« having so far been the principal mover, is still going on at Whatiwbatihoe, although the great majority of the natives from a distance that attended have now left. It was not a very interesting affair for jin onlooker, the principal business consitting of going through the names of tbow -who had already signed, and the obtaining more aignatures of landowner* to hand over their land* to Tawhiao. Mr Alexander McDonald, known a» the "white chief," has been a visitor and speaker, informing tho natives to their not agreeable surprise that the signatures so obtained were not worth more than the paper they were written on. Those present are now waiting the return and report of the deputation who went to town to interview the Governor. The meeting, it is said, took place on Saturday last, and it is reported here that the Hon. Mr Baljance will shortly come up and meet Tawhiao an i the natives at Whatiwhatihoe, possibly some time this week. There were a- good many natives in the township ,on Saturday last, but tho business people said they benefited but little from their visit. The Hikurantri-Ka vl)ia road is progressing under the various native contractors Several Europeans have been up to Ngatnnui creek, the Government hiring called for tenders for & bridge over it.
