W A IKTO HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The Show Committee met on Saturday evening in Mr Dyer's office, Cambridge, to wind up affairs in connection with the late show. The Secretary's report showed that the total receipts amounted to £93. The prize money amounted to £24 10.4, and other accounts to £45 13s lid, which were passed for payment. Mr J. Sharp very generous") y returned the amount of his prizes £3 5s Gd, and Mrs Gwynne £1 Is, which sums left » total balance of £22 to the credit of the chief committee. Thanks were passed to the town board for the free use of the Public Hall, to Mr Dyer, the secretary, Mr T. Wells, the chairman, and to Mr G. Edgecumbe, hon. secretary of the socipty, for their valuable services and zeal, and al^o to Mr Sharp and Mrs Gwynne for their donations. The committee then dissolved. Mr T. Wells, before thp members dispersed, spoke at some length on the serious aspect of the codlin moth peat, and he thought that it became a part of the functions of the society to take active measures to eradicate it. He mentioned the fact that in some {parts of America, local cotnmitties visited the orchards and took personal action to have the evil stamped out, actually compelling those who were either too indifferent or too laay to do so themselves. In this way the pest had been completely driven out of districts. He thought some plan should be proposed by which the Legislature could deal with this grave evil. If something wai not done spedily we would in a year or two have no apples for our show*. At tha request of those present, Mr Wells promised to convene a meeting of the local committee shortly to take the subject into consideration.
