The Excursion. Auckland, Friday Night. THE town to-day was overrun by Waikato excursionists, seven hundred of whom arrived by tho train. They appear to be enjoying the splendid day.

Religious Instruction. The Presbyterian Assembly to-day had an animated discussion on religions instruction in the public schools, and finally carried a resolution in favour of Bible reading.

Wreck of the Fanny Kelly. The court of inquiry into the wreck of the Fanny Kelly, while holding that the captain had made a mistake in supposing that he had cleared the Heads, did not deal with his certificate.

FireAt midnight last night a fire broke out in a small cottage owned by Mr Evans, at Avondalo. Mrs Evans was aroused by the crackling of the fire, and discovered that the kitchen was in flame*. She had barely time to escape with her baby wrapped in a blanket, before the whole building was enveloped in flame. The house was afterwards speedily burned to the ground, nothing whatever being saved. The house was insured for £100, and the furui'ure for £50 in the Colonial Office.
