With respect to the site for the central prison, it is stated that should Wellington insist on the present works at Mount Cook being suspended, the prisoners at present incarcerated there will bo distributed throughout the colony, and that it is more th.in probable that Blueskin, Otago, will" be tho place chosen for the erection of the central prison. The Government are taking action in the matter, but in what direction is not yet allowed to transpire. Admiral Tryon gives a return ball on board the Nelson to-morrow afternoon. The case of Ward v. the National Bank, Timaru, was before the Appeal Court again to-day, when application was made for leave to appeal to the Pi ivy Council. After argument judgment was reserved. The blue-jackets proved victorious by 05 points. At the inquest on the recent fire at Lauibton Quay, the jury returned a verdict to the effect that the fire originated in Myer's premises, but there was no evidence to show how or in what manner it originated. The following rider was added by the jury: " The jurors are of opinion that a great improvement might be made in the delivery of the water from the stand pipes, if an alteration be made so that if one hose burst the other hose attached to the same stand pipe need not be shut off in consequence." It is now considered certain that neither ' Admiral Tryou nor his ship will go South. At first it had been intended that the Hinemoa should be placed at the disposal of the admiral to visit Southern ports, with a view to inspecting the Southern defences, and also the West Coast Sounds, but as the time of the admiral in New Zealand waters is limited he is unable to make his intended visits. The meeting of Admiral Tryon, Hia Excellency '.he Governor and the members of Government, which was to have been held at Christchurch has been abandoned, and will now take place at Wellington early next week. The Premier and the Hon. Mr Larnach are expected at an early date, but it is unlikely that Sir Julius Vogel, who is at Waiwera will be present. The reason Ascribed for the change of programme, is that Admiral Tryon is anxious to reach Hobart as early as possible in order to be present at the conference re the federal council proposals at the conference where naval defence, the federation council, and Samoan affairs will be discussed. Dr Lemon this afternoon received a cablegram from the Eastern Extension Cable Company stating that the company refused to agree to the terms decided upon by the New Zealand Government, and that the company would hold out against any reduction in cable charges. Later. It has been decided that the meeting of Admiral i'ryon, His Excellency the Governor, and the members of Government will take place in Wellington on the 22nd inst, and it is understood that Sir Julius Vogel will not be present. H.M.S. Nelson will leave Wellington for Hobart on the 24th inst.
