The alarm was given about quarter to eight, when Myer's picture-framo manufactuiing shop in Lambton Quay was discovered to bo on hio ; but tUc oi igin of the conflagration is unknown. The Kne Brigade wero soon on the spot, but appeared unablo to copo with the task before them, and as a consequence tho hie spread rapidly to Smart's oyster saloon and Mrs Nolhoii's fruit shop, on either side, which wero soon levelled to the ground. Tho flames weie still gaining on The bugado, and Aldon's, tobacconist, Spider's music shop, Farmer's large furnituie warehouse, tho Wellington Moat Co.\s butcher shop, and Mrs Paul's shop weie completely destroyed. The fiio also destroyed the stables of the Meat Company, and then extended to somo cottage*, in a small Lanes running off Woodvvaid-streot, and all the c c weie destroyed. H.iyes, plumber, Anowsmith, fruitfier, and tho Branch Hotel, had very nanow escaw. Sparks weio cirried a long distnnco away, and tho Occidental Hotel, Dr Henry's house, and the Contt.il Club woro on hio at ono tutu*, but were saved with som'j dilhcultv. The dam.igii is ostlm iir.l at ovor £12.000, and tho insuiancps at £7000.
