FATAL ACCIDENT AT T AMAH ERE
A s\n fatal accident happened at Tatnahcre yesteiday morning. Early in the morning Mis Rogers, the wife of a settler on the Oliaupo nud, bonowed a spring cait from Mr Trethaway, a neighbour, living on the farm formerly occupied by Mr Gnbble, for the purpose of going to T.imahere. Mr Tiethaw ay's three childien — a boy, aged 1">, ninird Thomas, a girl named Mary, aged 14, and .itiothi-i girl named Annie, .iged 10 — who attend the Tamaheie school, took advantage of the r ircutnstance and accompanied Mis Rogei*. in the trap, Thomas driving. On le.icliing the einb.inkmeut between the Nanows bridge and the Tamahere store Mr" Rogers obseived that the hor-e was inclined to sweive and called the buy's attention to the fact, requesting him to keep the middle of the load. .She had -cucely spoken when the right wheel of the trap got over the side of the bank and the vehicle was piecipitited over, diaggmg the horse with it, a distance of some ten or twelve fo»t. The boy and the elder {•lrl jumped out when they saw the tr,\p going over, but Mis Roger* and the other girl were unable to do so and both fell underneath the tiap, whicn ciushed the girl beneath its weight, killing her almost instantaneously. Mrs Rogeis mi« tamed a severe shaking, though it is not thought her injuries aic of a -cnous natuie. The boy ran for assistance to the Tamahere stoic, and Mi (Jill, a settler, and Mr Thompson at once proceeded to the spot. They removed the body of the child to Mr (Jill's house, a short distanc away, and communicated with Sergt.-M.ijot McdJoveui at Hamilton by telephone. Mr MdJoveru reported the matter to Mr Searancke, con hut, and both procoedod to Tiinidhcie in the afternoon, when an inquest was held at Mr (Jill's house. After >"oiiie difficulty a inry of -even (of which Mr L. H. Kwen was foreman) was em pannelled. After hearing the evidence of Mrs Rogers, Thomas Trethawav, Andrpw Rogers (the own-r of the horse), and Mr (Jill, the jury letnrned a. verdict of accidental death, imputing no blame to anybody. The p.msnN of the deceased subse quently iemovcd the body to their rosi deuce.
