PROGRESS OF SETTLEMENT IN THE INTERIOR.
Thouoh large blocks of land have recently been transferred from the natives to European speculators and companies, still it cannot be said th it the w ork of settlement within the pa-»t few jears has been altogether commensurate with the many and large transfers o f land which have taken place. Almost all that vast tract of native country between Cambridge and Taupo, which but five or six years ago was in the hands of the aboriginal owners, is now open for settlement, and though progress has as yet been slow, still there is every indication that before long tho land will be finding its way into the hands of that class of settlers who will turn its great resources to the b»>Ht account. The other day Mr A. B. Stubbing, accompanied by Captain Thomas and party, left Cambridge for the Tatua country, m the vicinity of Taupo, where Mr Stubbing has recently srcuiod a large tract of excellent countryl The party, with camp material and equipment*, were driven in a four hoi so waggonette by Mr A. Forrest (son of Mr Jas. lorrest, of Surrey Farm, Cambridge) on to the ground. Fencing and clearing operations will be proceeded with immediately, and next year Mr Stubbing expects to have a large area in grass and ctops. A homestead will he elected on tho block, for which pui pose there is an excellent supply of tot.ua timber on the giound. As hoon as the glass is •>u(Htieiitly strong, Mr Stubbing v ill stock his estate with a herd of young cattle. The land of the Tatna is of excellent quality, is well watered, and richly endowed with the best of timber. This spnited pioneer has every confidence in the success of his new yen ture. He enters upon his new line of life with the good wishes of his many friends in Waikato. Mr Stubbing, wo may state, still adheres to his profession, and retains his offico at Canibndge. The Tatua estate will be managed by Mr F. Stubbing.
