TE RAHU PICNIC.
Tick nnnu.il picnic w.is held at Te Kalm on Wednc-d.iy 3l*t ult., and as usii.il w.is .111 uiKiu.ilihcd micccss. Owing to the tlne.-itenincf natuie of the weather in the morning (but which foi Innately cleared up,) is was decided to hold the picnic in Mr Johns' paddocks closo to the mill, so that shelter could be had at any moment. It was originally intended to hold it in Mr Walters' paddock, as there are some very pretty groves there, just the spot for such paitic*. There are also plenty of shelter trees on Mr Johns' farm, and under these the visitors enjoyed themselves during the day, dancing to the strains of the Te Awamutu band, swinging, &c. Loveis found plenty of Hecludod walk«, in which to while away the tune in lover like conversation. Care was taken that the children came in for then shaieof amusement, running and jumping for prizes, and indulging in the usual juvenile games. In the evening an exceedingly pleasant ball was held in the school room at the cross loads. At midnight, dancing ceased for a little while, the b.uid played the old year out, and the New Year in, dancing was then lesumed and kept up for a little longer, when all dispensed thoioughly satisfied with the day's and evening's enjoyments. Refreshments were provided by the Te Kahu settlers on their usual liberal scale, and indeed the solo pleasure of some of them consisted in assiduously attending to the wants of the guests during the day. Messrs John", Thomson, Weal, and others were unremitting in their attentions throughout the day, and in the evening at the ball. The Te Rahu picnics are ciiai acterised by an utter absence of stiff formality, and as the promoters always discountenance any display of vulgar snobbing, all meet, for the day at lea&t, on terni3 of equality, and thoroughly enjoy themselves. The piomoters are to be congratulated on the success of their aiiangementa. — (Own Correspondent.)
