TE AWAMUTU.

CHORAL SKRVICK AT h. JOHN S. A chouu, service was held at S. John's Chuith on Sunday evening. Theie was a very large congregation. The Key Mi Phillips conducted the service. He preached an excellent sermon from the text, " Giow in graoo," dwelling on the duties of everyone at the beginning of the new year. The anthem, which was the collect for the seventh Sunday after Trinity, was exceedingly well sung. During the service Mr Phillips stated that he lud leceivedft letter from the bishop requesting him to withdraw his resignation of his charge of thin distiict for the pie sent, and that in obedience to his Loid ship* request he had done so, and that for the present the services of the district will be conducted as heretofore. The announcement will be received with pleasure by a large number of the parishioners. When it was made known that Mr Phillips was to leave v->, a movement was set on foot to present Miss Phillips with a souvenir, at. a slight recognition of her valuable serviceb as organist, servioe* wln'oh havo been ohecrfully rendeied. I hope, now that we aie .so fortunate as to have her still to continue with us, that the project will be carried out, for »ha is entitled, to some tribute of gratitude fiom the poqgregatlon. Miss Phillips posses* musical talents of a very high older, and wo are moat fortunate in having her as organist. I must not onut a slight tribute to Miss Hunter, who has rendorcd very valuable ■ervice in this and the ftangiaobia Sundayschools, teaching every Sunday. No mutter how bad the weather,, she was there at the regular time. Thei-o .ire fow who would have gone to Kangiaohia ovory Sunday, whether wet or dry, as hhe has done, and everyone will be pleased to learn she is to remain here. General sympathy is felt for Mr Phillips, and indignation at the treatment ho has received fiom the bishop, who accepted hi« resignation, allowed him to pack his things, oall a aalo, and make all arrangements for leaving, and then coolly commands— for his request i* a command— him to remain. His Lordship is like the man in the fable, who tried to please everyone, but who pleased none.— (Own Correspondent.)
