MR LUMSDEN'S CHALLENGE AND MR HYLANVS ACCEPTANCE.

TO THR EDITOR. Sir, — I am sorry that I should have to trouble you with a second communication on this disagreeable subject, I must confess to ha\ing been deceived into a belief that Mr Lumsden was after all sincere in his eagerness for a contest. Mi' Lumsden challenged me through your paper. I accepted his challenge, the hour for putting down the money came, but MrLunisden didn't. I wassurpnsed, but not disappointed, for in my travels and in my profession men like Mr Lumsden are very frequently met with. Then* jealous and unmanly interference, though not injurious, is, I must confess both troublesome and annoying, and both they and their challenges aie better treated with the contempt they meiit than serious consideration. I do sincerely regret, however, that Mr Lumsden's courage should have failed him at the last minute, as his friends were deprived of a good hour's amusement, and some cheap fun at his expense. As both lie and Ins money have been spaied I trust he will devote them to a better purpose in future, and learn to be (silent when he cannot appieciate. 1 am happy in having afforded him a lesson, and trust he will advantage by it. I only regietit should have cost him anything, but then as the piovcib says ''Fools have to pay for their experience." But then Mr Lumsden is not a fool, for foolshave courage and Mr Lumsden has no courage. Hoping you will find room for these few paituig lines. — I am, etc. D'Akcy Hylvnd. Morrinsville, No\einbei 25th, 1884.
