RESCUE FROM DROWNING AT CAMBRIDGE.
What might have proved a fatal mishap, and another addition to the already l.injc chapter of drowning accidents in the Waikato river, occurred on Thursday afternoon. Ayounggnl named Martha Davis, about eleven years old, and a hoy named Harold Broom, aged seven, were disporting themselves in the vicinity of the boom aci oss the liver at Cambridge. They thought fit to take a sail in a small canoe which was lying alongside the bank, and the little girl getting in, the boy set about shoving the boat off. In so doing lie over-reached himself and tumbled into the river, which at this place is about 15 feet deep. His companion fortunately did not lose her presence of mind, and with much courage and considerable danger to herself she leaned over the side of the canoe, and w lien the boy came to the suiface seized him by the hand, and kept his head above the water until another boy, who was near by, came to her assistance, when thn unfortunate youth was extricated from his perilous position. Much credit is due to the little giil for the presence of mind and the courage which she displayed in the occurrence, and her action should not be allowed to pass unrecognised. It is a matter of much surprise that more accidents have not occurred at this place, as large numbers of boys and git Is are perpetually playing about the boom.
