ELECTION OF COUNCILLOR FOR THE AROHA RIDING.
Mr Cooper's Protest. As stated by our Aroha correspondent in Thursday's issue, Mr Cooper lias lodged, or rather telegraphed, a protest to the chairman of the Piako County Council at Cambridge, of which the following is a copy :— Te Arolia, September 3rd. The Chairman Piako County Council, Cambridge. As member of the Aroha riding in the council, I protest against election for my seat, \\ Inch i» not vacant. In any case time h\ed for election by returning officer is too late, as the supposed extraordinary vacancy having occurred 2(ith August, the day fixed for election, when I was returned. If no valid election on that date, fresh election must be held within 2o day*, \id« clau.se 45, 40, Regulation of Local Elections. You are in error in assuming R.M. declined my election \oid on the petition. The petition was not gone into. No order w.is made ; no proof of appointment given of the returning officer. Mr Kenrick gives me this advice. (This communication was made collect, 9s 7d.) To this the clerk replied :— " Election held under clause 5(J." (The following is a copy of the clause referred to: --"When any election or the election of any candidate is declaied to be void, any vacancy theieby created shall be deemed to be an extraordinary vacancy occurring on the date of such election.) Mixkrs' Havk a Right to Vote.— The council has received a legal opinion from Messrs Whitaker and Russell, Auckland, to the effect that holders of miners' rights may vote in an election for a councillor without being on the roll. Miners' rights, however, do not qualify to vote le the special loan.
[by telegraph.— own correspondent.] Te Aroha, Friday. The polling for a member for the Te Aroha riding in the Pinko County Council took place to-day. The numbers polled were : — Murphy 101) Cooper 10 Informal 1 Mr Murphy was declared elected. The election was only a form. Mr Cooper's friends held aloof, he having posted a notice requesting them to do so. Those who voted were chiefly from Waiorongomai, and miners. Everything passed off quietly, as the event excited little interest. Mr Cooper maintains that he was duly elected at the last election, and vows his intention^ of taking his seat next meeting. Complications are likely to arise.
The Cambridge Dairy and Produce Company call for tenders for the erection of a factory building. The well-known entire horse Young Wellington, the property of Mr G. Harper, will travel this season in the Upper Waipa district. Th« itinerary will be found in another columa.
