[BY TELEGRAPH. -COPYRIGHT.] [reuters telegrams.] Hong Kong, August 25. Intelligence i 3 to hand that the French ironclads engaged the Chinese forts at the mouth of the Foochow river to-day, and after two hours' cannonade the ships retired.
[Received August 27fch, 3.10 p.m.] The French Press on the English Criticism. Paris, August 26. The French Press generally in their leading articles angrily resent the criti-" asm ot the English papers on the French bombardment of Foo Chow arsenal, which they have described as merciless in its character.
A special message to the Press Association, dated London, Aug. 2G, states that in consequence of the active hostilities between France and China, much excitement now piovails among the native population, and a strong anti-European feeling is manifest. The ill-feeling is especially intense at the treaty port-?, and the position of the European residents is one of considerable danger.
