[BY TELEGBAPH. — OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Melancholy Occurrence. Auckland, Wednesday Night. Intelligence reached town to-day of a shocking fatality that occurred at Mangawai on Friday. A native girl, seven years of age, was burnt to death in a whare. The relatives buried the remains the following day without giving information to the police or the coroner. Special Constable Sturch, stationed at Mangawai, heard of the occurrence yesterday, and communicated the fact to Superintendant Thomson to-day. Mr Thomson has instructed the constable to dis-inter the remains, and communicate with the nearest corner in order that an inquest may be held.

The Property-tax Prosecution., GUliee, in the ewe Surrey,
Property-tax Commissioner v. tho New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company, held that the holder of property in New Zealand is bound to pay property-tax on the full value of the property without deducting therefrom his English indebtedneßS secured over the property. Ho gave judgment as follows :— The defendant company is bound to render statements of q property as principals so far as guaran- f teed investors are concerned, and to far as the agricultural company is concerned, the defendant company is not bound to render statements either as principals or agents nor as trustees, inasmuch as the agricultural company has its head quarters in the colony, and is -^ bound to render a plain statement, Judgment is therefore given for tho plain* tilf.
The Auckland Hoodlums. In the charge of the rioting on Saturday night, at the Police Court the bench found Butler guilty on three charges, and for the two first offences defendant was committed to 60 days' imprisonment with hard labour without the option of a fine, and in the last case to pay a fine of 28s, the amount of damage and costs, or iv default 7 days.
