SCHOOL MATTERS. A very successful concert was held on Wednesday evening tor the purpose of getting funds to provide a present for Mr and Mrs Nicholson on their departure from among us. The present, which took the form of a purse of sovereigns, was presented to Mis Nicholson on Friday by Mrs Ogle, who, on behalf of the ladies of Kihikihi, expressed her regret at the departiue of Mr and Mrs Nicholson. With the purse a testimonial, — numerously signed by parents of children attending the school, — was presented. The school committee then piesented a testimonial of a most flattering character each to Mr and Mrs Nicholson. All united m wishing them good speed and piospeiity in the pUce to which they are sjoing (Mr Nicholson Ins heen tiansferied to ii J iuni). A meeting of the school committee was held the same evening for the purpose of selecting a teacher accoiding to instructions from the Board of Education. The choice fell on Mr Collier, 8.A., "who is temporarily in charge ot the Cambridge primary and high schools. At the meeting the two following resolutions were passed :—lst: — 1st "That taking into consideiation the action of the board in reference to Mr and Mis Nicholsons removal from the Kihikihi school, and the way they have utterly ignored all communications from this committee, supported by ninety per cent, of the parents of childien attending the school, this committee considers it next to useless offering an opinion with regard to the selection of any other teacher ; but out of considei ation to parents of children i esiding in this dibtnot, select Mr Collier as a suitable teacher for this school. Judging from past expeiience, it aj peais to be simply a matter of iorm that the board now consults us at all." 2nd "That this committee have no confidence in the boaid &o long as there aie men on it who belong to a certain secret society that is opposed to peibous of the Roman Catholic pei suasion. One member of the board when on a \ isit to Te Awamutu expiessed himself to the effect that as long as he was a member of the Board of Education, he would use his very best endeavours to purge all schools under the control of the board of all Roman Catholic teachers. Men with these very extreme views are, in our opinion incapable of dealing out justice, and we believe have been instrumental in getting Mr and Mrs Nicholson, who aie Roman Catholics, removed."— (Own Correspondent.)
