FIRE AT TE AWAMUTU.

A firk occurred here .it 1.30 a.m. on Tuesday morning, by which a bake-house owned by Mr Duffus, and occupied by Mr Glass, was completely destroyed. The fire was first seen by a lady stopping at Mr Lewis' hotel. She woke during the night and saw the glare of the file tluough her hudioom window. rihe immediately called Mr Lewis, who gave the alcVim, but it was too late to save anything, as the whole building was in (lames. Mr CJlass had not been in the bake house since 3 p.m. on Monday, but his man laked the ashes out of the furnace at 3 p.m , and it is supposed some of the embers fell on the floor and smouldered till midnight, when the (lames bioke out. Nothing was saved. Two tons of flour, half a ton of salt, a quantity of oats, wheat, a lot of sacks, together with all the tins and eveiy thing used in the business weio lost. The fire began about 1 or half past, and burned steadily as long as theie was any of the flour left ; it was 6 o'clock before the flames died out. The loss is \ery heavy as Mr Glass had nothing insuied. The oxen is quite uninjuied. It is fortunate there was no wind at the time or the consequences might have been seiions, as thete are several buildings ir the immediate Mcinity. — (Own Correspondent).
