CAMBRIDGE TOWN BOARD.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Cambridge Town Board was held at the board otlke it 4 o'clock on Monday afternoon. Present : Crs. T. Well? (ohairm.in), Richaulaon, Clark and Hewitt. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
Marsden's Gas.— Tlic Clerk stated that no reply as yet had been receh ed to tlic resolution of the board re the introduction of Marsden's gas, and w hich had been fot warded to that gentleman.
Cattle Depasturing on Sundays — Oodfrey Collins, town ranger, wrote asking the board if he was empowered to impound cattle depa'-tuiing on the streets on Sunday. People turned their cattle out on this day, which was a source of much complaint to residents .—lt.—lt was agreed to instruct the ranger to impound cattle at all times when they were
illegally trespassing. ■ Striking a Eate. —The Chairman moved in terms of his resolution of the 26th May, that a rate of Is in the £, be struck on all the rateable property in the Cambridge Town District for the year ending 31st March, 188."), payable in one sum to the Treasurer of the Town Board. _—Cauied.
Defaulting Dog Owners.—The as sistant dog registrar sent in a return to the effect that there were no less than eight persons in the town who possessed unregistered dogs. The chairman pointed out that if this money were not collected before next mouth, they could only sue for half fees. It was accordingly agreed that the ranger be instructed to lay an information against all owners of dogs who had not paid their fees. It was agreed to make a demand on the Cambridge Road Board for £1, which had been wrongfully received by them from Mr J. R. S. Richardson for dog tax. And further to request the board to instruct their collector to desist from gathering the tax from Mr Richardson in future.
Public Hall Improvements.—The following tenders were received for painting the hall:—Bensley, £16 15s (accepted); Hayes, £17 10s; Da\is, £18 9s ; Stuart, £22 3s 4d ; Ansell, £32. In the event of Bensloy's tender falling through, the streets committee was empowered to accept either of the next two lowest tenders.
Amendments to Town Districts Act. The Chairman said that he .and MiHewitt had waited upon Mr Whitaker prior to his departure for Wellington relative to certain alterations in the Town Districts Act. One was that instead of two-thirds of the votes of the town being required to carry a borrowing proposal • one-half should be necessary, as in the case of the Municipal Corporations Act. The other amendment suggested was to -the effect that instead of the present system of electing the board, one-half of the member* should retire at the end of ■ each year, the other half continuing in office.
