HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
*■ . . '- Tin: adjourned ordinary meeting of the council was held on Monday nigl.t. Present: His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Bradley and Johnson.
Scott, Davy, Gas Liuhtino.—Mr Marsden wrote, intimating that he had relinquished the idea of erecting gasworks in Hamilton, as the cost was beyond his means.
Resignation* of Councillor. — Gv. Yon Sturmcr wrote, resigning his seat. The Mayor icported 'that as there was no mooting last week, be had accepted the resignation, ni\d taken sfeps to hold an election to fill the vacancy.
Tub £110 Award.—The Colonial Under-Socretary wrote in reply to a letter from the council that a careful enquiry into the circumstances connected with the CNO award, which had been set aside by the Supreme Court, had lcvealcd the fact that at the time the sum of £40,000 grant to counties in the Pro\ince of Auckland was distiibuted, the town of Hamilton East had become a poition of the Borough of Hamilton, and was not entitled to a shaie of the grant. Under these circumstances, the Government could not sec its way to pay the boiough the sum of £110, but inasmuch as the council had been misled by the Government in the appointment of an arbitrator, which appointment was ullra fire*, the Colonial Secictiiry was prepared to refund the amount of the legal costs incut red by the boiough in testing the validity of the award in the Supremo Com t. —The Town Clcik was instructed to fotward particulars of legal expenses to the Government.
Works Report.—The Foreman of Works' report on vaiious small woiks in the boiough was received and dealt with. It was agreed to gtavel poition of Ohaupo ro.id near Williamsons gate; to repair biidge near Biadley'f, Hamilton lOast, andtogiavcl small portions of load in vaiious of the borough.
put 3 Tiik Pdbi.ic Pound.—The committrc appointed for this purpose reported that they had made enquiiy into the management of the pound, and lecomincnded that the poundkeeper be lefunded the money he is out of pockft, and that in futuie he leceive .")0 per cent, of the net pound revenue. The repot twasadoptcd.— Cr. Johnson thought the council should consider the piopiiety of lemoving the pound to a more central place—Cr. Bradley said the matter had been fully discussed, but had been postponed, owing to the want of funds.—The committee appointed to enquiie into Mr James Coombes' claim tor expenses while in chat go- of the pound repotted that they found on enquiry that Mr Coombes was not entitled to any compensation.
Buuoihsh Giiwki, Pits.—The Mayor brought under the notice of the council the circumstance that great demand existed for gravel for loads outside the boiough. If this system were persisted in, the Hamilton West pit would soon be exhausted. He mo\ed that no gravel bo allowed to bo taken out of the pit in futuie, except for roads in the boiough. This was. seconded by Cr. Bradley and carried.
The Gum Treks.—On the motion of the Mayoi, Cr. >Scott and the mover were empowered to take the neu's^aiy stops for the lenioval of the gum tiees in Vie-toiia-stieet abutting on Mr MoGovetn's propei ty. The Mayor taid no offer had been leceived for the trees, and his idea was tint the ttees should be cut up into suitable and sold for fiiewood.

GhALKAL R\.ti;. -It was resolved to stiikc a general iato foi the citrieni; year of one shilling in the £ on all mteable in the
propei ty borough. River Bvnk Protection.—lt was resolved to plant willows at different parts of the liver banks where necessary for the protection of same, the woik to be can ied out under the supervision of the woiks committee.
Tiik Solicitor's Feks.—The Mayor moved in accordance with notice that le&olntion No. 13 of the 7th April, refcrt ing to Mi Hay's bill of costs be lescinded, and that the statement read by the mayor be leoidcd.—Cr. Bradley seconded.— Cr. DiU y moved as an amendment that the motion be not rescinded.—The amendment lapsed for want of a seconder, and the motion was then put and carried.—On the motion of Cr. Scott it was lesolved to pay Mr Hay's bill in full.
The Public Hall.—The Mayor moved in accordance with notice :—" That the council take over and become security for the liabilities existing on the Volunteer and Public Hall, and arrange with Messrs O'Neill and Knox, the present sureties, to pay all claims, interest, &c, &c, at present outstanding, the council taking over the entile management of the hall for the public, the airangement with the trustees to remain as at present."—Cr. Davy seconded the motion.—Cr. Scott was in favour of deferring the matter until there was a full council.—The Mayor said this was an adjourned meeting, and there might not be a full attendance next meeting. Councillors knew of the motion. —Ci?. Johnson, Davy and Biadley were of opinion that if the council could do other business with a bare quorum, they might do this.—The motion was then and canied,
put Public Library.—The Mayor moved that a Public Libiary be established in the Boiough, and that a subscription list be opened for the purpose and that the council use its best endeavours to further the object.—This was seconded by Cr. Bradley and carried unanimously.
MischLLA.NEOU.s &c.—A number of small accounts were passed for payment. —The Mayor reported that the overdraft was £626 13s 2d.—lt was agreed to keep on the extra borough workmen until the giim trees were taken down. This was all the business.
