LARCENY OF A SADDLE. Pare, a native, was charged with having, on the 2nd Apiil, stolen a saddle and bridle valued at 355, the property of one Patrick Crosbie, Prisoner admitted taking the articles, but said he found them on the side of the road. From the evidence of the prosecutor and others, it appeared that Grosbie had ridden the horse from his father's place, Kirikiriroa, to the railway crossing, where he got on the ballast train and proceeded to his work, turning the horse loose. This was his usual custom. The horse was subsequently found near the Peach Grove, minus the saddle and bridle. Prisoner was seen to pass by the place on a bare-backed horse, and it was presumed the temptation to acquire a saddle and bridle was too strong for the native mind to resist. The police deposed to the arrest of the prisoner, who had gone to the Piako, and to recovering the stolen property. The Magistrate held the charge proved, and fined the prisoner four times the value of the saddle and bridle, with costs, the whole amonnting to about £12. A few small debt cases were also dealt with.
