First Day. The first day's races of the autumn meeting of the above club 4ook place at the course, Gwynnelands, yesterday, and, as we anticipated, pioved most successful, though the attendance was not so large as expected. The gloominess of the previous day gave rise to gloomy anticipations as legaius the weather, but the morning broke me of the finest of the season, and the weather continued favourable throughout the day. The fineness of the weather and the suitableness of the season fixed for the meeting brought comparatively few people from the outside districts, and the attendance on the course yesterday numbered only about 350 people. The stewards and the secretary —Mr Scott —had made every arrangea.ent for the accomodation of their patrons, but it is a great pity that they are debarred, through the exhoibitant price asked, from securing the attendance of a bund —the absence of which is always felt. The giand stand was but poorly patronised, but the saddling paddock presented an unusual business-like appearance, theie being a large number of the book and pencil fraternity from Auckland. A few of the minor attraction and game of chance mortals were in attendance, and had their patrons. As to the racing, it was about the best which has ever been witnessed on a Waikato course. The entries were large, and of the beslTracing blood in the province, and the various events were invariably well contested. The club has been very fortunate in securing Mr Buckland as starter, the services of this gentleman never failing to gi\ c satisfaction to all concerned. Col. Lyon acted m his old capacity as judge, but his office on this occasion was an ea«y one. The Maiden Plate was a very intci eating event. Alpha started the favouute, and won as he liked. Mr Carter's filly was thought a likely boil over, and was favouied witli a good few supporters, but she lost her chancr by bolting off the course. The Hmdles was an admiiably contested event. Chandler started at even inonev, and was universally backed. Quilp started at 4to 1, and by local sports was much fancied. Woodpecker lan round a hurdle, and lost his chance, and Whalebone expeiienced his old misfortunne. The Cup, which was the event of the day, turned out the best field we have ever seen in Waikato, and the excitement throughout the contest was very gi eat. Rewi made e\cellent running but the victoiywas evidently an easy one to the favouute Noimanby which was heavily backed to win. The content thioughout was one of gieat interest and all the horses received their share of public favour. A splendid field started for the Shoitb which was taken by Mitraileuso haid held, though Consul started a certainty. The Steeplechase was a grand lace and fell an easy victory to Fair Play the favourite. Maiden Plate, of 30 soys ; l^ miles. Mr Cniter's filly fell behind and after going about half a mile round thought to take a rear cut across the paddock. Alpha, soon got to the front and at the back of the canine, assumed the lead, Rangipo bunging up the rear. Ransfield's colt raced well with the leading horses and followed Alpha round the coiner, but coming up the straight the latter had evidently all his own way and, though gamely challenged by the colt, won as he > hked. Grasshopper imi a poor third. Alpha staited the favourite at 2to 1 and was well backed, there were 91 on the totalisator, 41 on the favoin ite, the dividend being 21s. Time 2 mins 27 sec. Handicap Hmidles, Of 40 soys.: 2 miles; over eight fligh s of hurdles. 3ft, Gin. high. Nomination, 2 soys ; acceptance, 2 soys. Mr J. LennanVs eh q Chandler, agtd, 10-,t 101b (Fairell) . . 1 Mr J. Quilp, and FairpUy now got in the lead, but Woodpecker lost his chance by running round a huidle early in the contest. Chandler kept steadily behind, Coming up the straight Quilp, Pan play, and Chandler were miming together taking the hurdles in the order named. Quilp fell behind at the next huidle, and F,ur Play, after leading to the back of the course, \va« ousted by Chandler, and a \eiy exciting contest ensued. Fair Play made another attempt for leading honouis, and on enteiing the straight was close up, with Quilp aboutjtwo lengths behind. Chandlei ran a steady race to the fini^li and won hard held. There were 204 on the tofcalisator and 72 on the winner. Dn idend, 255. Caaibbidge Cup Handicap, of lOOsovs.; 2 miles. Nomination, 2sovs. ; acceptance, 3sovs. Mr A. The field did not get away until after some little delay, and after all did not succeed in getting oft well together. Rewi went to the front and the other horses kept well together and close up. Passing the stand the first time Rewi was still leading, Woodpecker and Normanby following in order, all the rest running v. ell. Normanby soon put on a spurt and passed his rivals in succession, and. was closely followed to the front by Mr Ryford's big roan. The excitement was now intense, and Administrator, Rewi, Normanby and Fishwoman were loudly called for, and each at times looked a winner. N.irmanby led round the corner, Irishwoman about half-a-length behind, and Administrator well up. The whole field weie as yet well together, and all under the whip. Fishwoman and Normanby had now the contest between them, but the latter was not to be put out, and landed a winner by about half-a-length. On the totalisator 86 were on the winner, making a dividend of 28s. Time, 3min. 41secs.

Mr Buckland had some difficulty in getting the horses away, owing to a little dodging on the part of the jockeys, one of whom, Williams, the rider of Witiora, was fined £5 for insolence, and £S for disobedience at the post. Mitraileuse went off with the lead, and a very pretty race was made, Consul, who was the favourite, running well up. Victory was well ridden and worked into position, and ran well for the lead. Mitraileuae evidently won as he liked. The contest was very interesting throughout. The dividend on the winner was £2 3s.
