Otago schools than this time last year, and about 700 of this increase is in Dunedin. The total is 17,760. The Wakatipu takes ninety draught horses from here to Sydney. A seam of hematite ore, which is believed to be valuable, has been discovered while cutting down Dowlingstreet to its permanent level. It bears very favourable comparison with Nelson and English samples. It has been tried at the Hillside Workshops satisfactorily. Wednesday. A fatal accident occurred at Port Chalmers to-day. John Reid, in tho employ of Find lay and Co., timber merchants, was loading railway trucks with timber from the brigintine Enterprise, and whilst he was in the act of turning over a piece of black pine about 14 feet in length in one of the trucks the timber must have been on the balance, and by some means he fell out of the truck, bringing the timber full on his face, completely smashing it, and fracturing his skull. He was unmarried, but was the sole supporter of his mother and sister. He was about fifty years of age.
