CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday.
A twelve-roomed house at the corner of Stanmore-road and Swan-street, occupied by H. B. Rorenson, was burned this morning. It was insured for £500 in the National, and the furniture was insured In the Standard for £250. The building was destroyed. The damage to the furiii° tnre is estimated at £100. The annual meeting of the Chrisfchurch Benevolent Association was he'd to-day. The report stated that 1764 applications for relief had been dealt with, the number of persons assisted being 1854, including 918 children, and 22 deserted wives. The receipts had been £2262, including the balance from last year of £707 ; 255 had been raised by subscription, and £453 by a " Ciarity Sunday." The expenditure had been spent in buying food, clothing, and coal. Wednesday, The body of a patient named John Duffielil, who esoaped from Sunnyside on Marph, QQth, was found this afternoon in the upper Heathcote, a mile from the asylum.
