FATAL FIRE AT PAR NELL.
A DK-intiXTiVK fire occurred at Parnell at 1 o'clock yesteiday morning, resulting in the destruction of two houses at the corner of Earl-sti eefand Manukau rtud. One was used as a boat ding house and boot and bhoe shop, and the other was occupied by Mi's Kevitt, the well known vocalist. One of the boaideis, a young man named Michael Hogan, living at the foinier place, was unable to make his way out, and Ins charred lemauib weie afterwaidh found in the ruins. The Paniell watei works had only just been taken over, and theie was consequently a good supply of water. Had it been othei wise a Luge block of buildings imifrit have baen destroyed. The Auckland File Bugade declined to assist, the .superintendent stating that his ordeis were not to act beyond the limit of the city on account of the action of the insurance companies in refusing to make any contribution to\\aid& the expenses of the biigade when acting at the late hie at Mount Eden, which wab also beyond the city limits. He, however, pel nutted the Sahjge Corps, under Caph Field, to iibe the brigade's hose, and he also lemained to give any advice which might be requiied of him. The damage done is estimated at £1500.
