PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the above body was held at the council chambers, C.imbiidge, at 5 p.m. on Wednesday last. Present: Cis. J. P. Campbell (chairman), J. 0. Fnth, W. T. Firth, H. E. Whitaker, W. P. Ohepmell, and E. Maclean. Tkvmwa\. — The Chairman of the Tramway Committee, Mr J. C. Fiith, vei bally reported that the tramway was again in full working oi'der. — It was agreed, on the motion of Cr. Chepmell, " That the Tramway Committee be appointed a committee to wait upon the hon. Minister for Mines, for general goldfields purposes. Kilgouk SniEKr. — Regarding the formation of this .street, at Waiorongomai, the Board of Governors of the Thames High School wrote, declining to subaciibe to the work. Tiie following is the correspondence which ha^s parsed on this subject :— " Cambridge, Bth January, 1884. Sir,— The mombeis of the Piako County Council, having been informed that your board is willing to spend a considerable sum of money in forming and metalling Kilgour-street, and the prolongation thereof fiom Mill-street, in the township of Waiorougomai, to where the road joins the Te Aroiia-Shaftesbury main road, between lots seven (7) and lots twelve (12), I have been requested by the council to communicate with you in reference to the matter. The council has also been advr-ed that your board purposes purchasing from the levsee his interest in lot seven (7) adjoining the prolongation of Kilgour-staeet, for a width of thirty-three (33) links, so as to make the roads an uniform width of one and a-half (lh) chains. My object in writing to yon, is to inform you the committee would be prepared to assist in cavrying out this work, and would subsidise it providing it were done under the supervision of the county engineer. As thtsummer weather has apparently now set m, it would be well to have *;he work at once carried out. I shall therefore be gUd to hear from you on the subject, and if the council can arrange with your board as to the amount to bo contributed lespectively. No delay need take place in the initiation and cairying out of this very necessaiy and impoitant undei taking. — T have the honour to be, itc, J. P. Camp'ukij,, chaiimau. The following is the leply to the above :—: — Office of the Thames High School, Thames, February sfch, 1S84 : Sir, — I have the honour to acknowledge theieceipt of your letter of the Bth January last ou the subject of foiming and metaling streets &c. in the Waiorongomai township, and to inform you that it was laid before and considered by a meeting of the Board of Governors held yesteiday. The governors are unawaie of the giounds on which your opinion iests as to theii desire prosecute the several works mentioned by you ; but think your council must have been misinformed on the matter. x\.s expressed by me in former communications, the governors while recognising the impoitance of the works mentioned, still regret that they are not prepared to expend their funds in the manner suggested by you.— l have, &c, Richard A. Reach, secretary. Roads and Bkidhks.— The Government notified that out of the amount applied for by the council under this Act, viz., £3000, the sum of £000 was specially granted for budges on the Taotaoroa main road, and £S4O to be allocated among the seveial main roads in the conuty. — It was agreed on the motion of Mr H. E. Whitaker that the £BiQ be allocated as follows :—: — Waitoa rnaiu road, £400, Te Aroha ditto, £400, Taotaoro.i ditto, £40.— 0n the motion of Cr. J. C. Firth It was agreed that Mr Sandes bs instructed to prepare plans and specifications for the bridges on the Taotaoroa road at once, and that the chairman be authorised to call for tenders immediately, such plans and specifications aie prepared. — On the motion of the chairroan, it was agreed, " That in all contracts under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act a clause be inserted, stating that contractors would receive their money on receipt of same from Government. " — Itjwas further agreed, on the motion of Cr. Whitaker, that Mr Purchas be instructed to prepare plans and specifications for the road woiks between Te Aroha and Waiorongomai, and for thp culverts between Waiorongomai and Shaftesbury, and that the chairman be authoiised to call for tenders immediately same are prepared. — In reference to the above road, a letter was receive^ from Mr j. L. Grant and others, urging the council to construct culverts at once. — The clerk was instructed to reply that the engineer had been instructed to that effect. — On the motion of Cr, J, C, Firth, it was agreed. " That ft poll be taken of the ratepayers for the Taotaoroa and Waitoa Road Districts in re the Government grant under the Roads and ' Bridges Construction Act. Pound Ar Te Aroha.— On the motion of Cr. Whitaker, it was agreed to establish a public pound at Te Aroba. Accounts,— Sundry accounts were naased for payment, and the next meeting ordered for Wednesday, 12th, Mavoh.
