The Cambridge Town Board has forw.ii ded the following communication on the above biibject to the Minister of Public Works, and copies of the same to the members of Waikato and Waipa, to the hon. J. Williamson, the hon. F. Whitaker, Mr, Peacock, M.H.R., and the chairman of the county council, asking their co-operation ill the matter : — Town Board Office, Cambridge, 23rd October, ISB3. lo the Hon. thk Minishsk ron Pum.it Works, WKI-LhSGION. Sir, — I have the honour to call your attention to the fact that, notwithstanding the promise made by the Government at the close of last session to the member for Waikato, that tenders for the Cambridge, Wiukato and Thames railways should be called for immediately, tenders are now being called for the construction of the last-named only I would respectfully ask jour consideration ol the following facts •— (1) The continued dpi ay in the construction of the Cambridge branch line is .1 souice of very gr.ne hardship and inconvenience to the settleis of this distitrt; (2) it the present annngement is adhered to no -.teps can be taken to complete such line until the close of the present contract, viz , six months from the time .it which it is let, whereas by letting both works in the one contract the six months now allowed would be ample for their completion ; (3) the rails and sleepers art- now lying at Hamilton, so th.it the actual further outlay will only be that in\o!\ed in the laj ing of the road; (4) the Eureka tontr.u t, for which tenders are now called, \ull run over tour miles of the Cambridge track, so th.it ■in additional eight miles is all th.it is required in order to the completion of the line ; (5} it is estimated that half the Waikato freight is made up of consignments to the Cambridge district, the bulk of \\ hull is now ot necessity shipped at Mercer. By the construction of the Cambridge branch (eight miles) the Government will receive the whole of this tr.ide. In view of these facts till' boat d respectfully urges tint the specifications bo so nmended as to include both works in the one contract. Will you be good enough to cause the matter to be enquired into immediately, and a telegraphic reply sent. — I have the honour to be, sir, your obedient servant, Thomas Wi r is, Chairman C.T.H.
