CONCERT AT HAMILTON.
Thi: concert in aid of the funds of S. Maiy's Roman Catholic Clnuch, Hamilton, came off in the Oddfellow .s' Hall on Tuesday evening 1 , and was in eveiy way successful. The committee, with Miss Chitty, the honorary secretary, at their head, woi ked moot eneigetically, and their effoits were lewaidod in a manner which must be in the highest degree gratifying to them. The conceit was indeed one of the best we remomber m Hamilton. There was a freshness about it which cannot well be attained unless, ab in this, case, a Luge measure of the talent is " foieign," if we may use the expression. New faces are almost as welcome as new songs, and when novelty is combined with excellence the lesult is hound to be satisfactory. It is no reflection on the local amateurs to say that the interest of the audience was ccntied in the performance of the ladies who so kindly came from Auckland to lend their assistance. One of these ladies, Miss Swan, has on many pievious occ.i.sions given hei \aluable sen ices .it simil.u enteitiiinments in different paits of the Waikato, and the imputation she has established for heisolf u,is in no wise dimmed by her ofForts on Tuesday evening. Possessed of a clear, flexible \oice, of considerable power, she sings with e.i >c and grace, and imparts to her hghtei song* a n.mote which is as chaiming as it is unaffected. In songs diffeiing so widely m style as "Come back to Ei m, ' and " Tiie Banker."' '-lie was equally at home, and her rendoiing of the latter, which was given m lesponse to a unanimous encore, fairly bi ought dowu the house, and die w down a perfect shower of bouquets. Miss Staunton was equally successful, and in another manner earned the sympathies of the audience. Her singing of " Love's Request" was a musical treat of a high order. In response to an encore, Miss Staunton simply bowed her acknowledgments. In the second part Miss Swan sang, " Keep me m your memory,' 1 with much feeling, and in response to a recall she contributed the well-known ballad "Killainoy," which, it is needless to add, evoked most enthusiastic applause. Miss Staunton sang the " Merry Bird," for which she was again loudly encored. Mrs T. (i. Sandes ami Mr Burnand sang the duet, " I've Wandeiul in Dreams, and the other vocal items were Mr Wallnutt's " Enron on the Rhino," Mr Gieen's "The Vagabond," Mr Bui naud's "When Other Lips," and a duet from "Pinafoie" ("Kind Captain," &c), by Messrs Moore and Sims. One of the best thing* on the piogiamme was the pianofoite duet "Satis Souci," bv Misses Boylan and O'Sullivan (of Auckland). Without attempting a ciiticisiu, we may say that the execution was pei feet. The' selection, moreover, was a most judicious one. The piece was thoroughly appieciated because the motif wns easily comprehended. Amateurs too of ton fall' into tho error of playing over the heads of their smdianqe, The pianoforte solo "Highland Gems," by Miss Missen, afforded scope for the display of considerable talent, and the lesult was in every sense pleasing. Mr W. Kelly contributed a very pleasing solo on the violin, in his usual artistic manner. The Hamilton Choral Society rendered good service in part song.s and choruses, of which they contributed foui;, and Mr Bell's String Band {jlayod the overtures in good style. The lalanco of tho programme consisted of a humourous Irish roading by Colonol Lyon, and a recitation by Mr S. IS. (i. Smith. The pianoforte accompaniments to the songs were very efficiently played by Miss Boylan and Miss Chitty, and those to the chorus singing by Miss Newell, pianiste of the Choral Society. 1 Mr Bell conducted and led the string band. The hall was well filled by a most appreciative audience, and the leceipts cannot lie far shoit of £30.
