X Whitaker, \V. L. C. Williams, and Brunskill. The Allegkd Dishonest Workmanship of Coxtu\ctobs. — The following communication, was received fiom Mr 0" Donoghue, retraiding the chaiges bi ought against him at the last meeting of the council on account of the deficient and dishonest woikmanship on certain* bridges on the Moiiinsville-Te Aiolia load :: — ■ COXTRACTOR\S Ei:POKT UK BRIWRS, Waihou. Wailiou, Piako. Sik, — In reply to your lettei of the 15th ult. , enclosing a copy of the engineer; report of the 15th ult., I have the honour to state, fiibtly, that I accept as true the statement in saul repoit legaidtng the bad character of the caipenter's woik ; secondly, that wlnle accepting uo much to bs true, and as a contractor, acknowledging my lespansibility, 1 am not pei tonally guilty of the slightest dishonesty m the "matter; thiidly, that I consider it Aery unfair of the engineer in fnnu.shiug the leport, which so seriously loflects upon me, not to have clearly pointed out on whom the blame ought to be put, naturally on the carpenters who did the work ; who had engaged to do the woik according to the specifications, and to the satisfaction of the council, and to the engineer. The engineer states that the damage done by late floods was entirely owing to the defective workmanship on the pait of the contiactois who built the bridges. Now, the engineer knew that I had personally no hand in this work, and he ought to have kept this clearly before you and the lest of the council. 1 engaged a carpenter named J. Heathcote to build the bridges according to specifications, and to the satisfaction of the engineer, which, of course, lie undertook to do. The engineer's inspector was on the .spot all along, looking atter the woik, and, of coulee, I ti tinted t'> him to that the caipenteii did the woik piopmly. The engineei, no doubt, thought as 1 did, else what was the use of appointing him. I do not siippoa'.. 1 that any fuithoi explanation i^ required to show the council th.it I was not in any way lcsponsiblo for the disgiaccful woik on the biidgea ; andfiutbei, that it is alto o vther owing to the dishonesty of the caipjnlen. The _ relent concluded by saying that the wiiloi held himself legally ltspi'ii-nble, and would gladly meet the le^ponsibilifcy ; also, that iie was glnd the fraud had been detected, as Ins name and reputation had been so senously involved. Mr Sandes engineer, who was present, said that the conin actor, on finding out iie hid l)een decei\ ed by the men whom he had engaged, consented willingly to make the woi U right again, and finish the job aecoiding to the specific ttions at his own cost. — On the motion of O. Firth it was agreed that Mr O'Donoghuc, though j legally responsible, was not moially so, and that lie be exonerated from any intentional dishonesty in the matter, and also that his letter of explanation be placed on the minutes of the council. RoADh at Waiokonciomal. — Mr Ferguson, as a deputation fiom the people of the above township, u-feired to the bad condition of the load between the main toad and the township, over which much ti attic was now passing. — A tramway was abo wanted from Mi Mm lay's landing to tiie township. — After discussion it was .weed on the motion of Or. Firth, "That the load at light angles to the main road at Waioionnomai, through Mr Wilson's propei ty, lecommendcd by the engineer of the county, bo adopted by the council, and that application be n.adc to the Thames High School authonties for a contubutiou of £100 towards fencing aud making the said roads, and that tliis council undeifcake to contiibutc an equal amount." Mat \m \t \-Oxroiu> Ro u>. — A communication was leeened fiom the manager of the AueUwd ■Vgucultuial Company, piopos-iug an alteration of tinabove line of load as at piosent laid out, in older to suit the line of lailway w Inch lnd been laid out, and the lai ins which were now being laid oil. — It was a3la 31 ceil on the motion of O. Fnth that the council agree to the recommendation as made, and th.it Mi- Smith j Chief Siu\eyor, be so intoi mcd. liiuui.K Thick at Tk Aiioiia.— An application was leccUed tiom Mr Joshua CufF, To Aroha, on behalf of minei sand others th<ne, asking the council to consider the construction of a bntllo fci.ick up tlie bald &pm on the west side of tlie Arolia mountain, -where a leef, of what was generally thought would be a pay ible clnuaclcr, had been discovered (iirent diiliculty was experienced by woik men in going to and from the claims w Inch had already been pegged out.— lt was agiepd, on tlie motion of Cr. Whitaker, that the matter be referred to the engineer to report upon. Roads near Camduidgk.— Cr.
