THE PETITION FOR THE REMOVAL OF MR NORTHCROFT, R.M.
A spkcial meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council, convened by the Mayor, on the requisition of five councillors, was held last nipht to consider what steps should be taken in regard to the petition of Cambridge residents for the removal of the Resident Magistrate presented to Parliament by MrJ. Slice lian, M.H.R. There were present : His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Yon Stunner, Peat, Bradley, Tippen, Lovett, McDonald and Cochmne. A number of ratepayers also attended. The following resolutions were put and carried unanimously, and almost without discussion. No. I.— Mov«»d by Or. Yon Stunner, and seconded y Cr. Bradley, " That this council ha-ring for the first time learned, through the publication of the same in the newspaper press, the nature of the petition of certain Waikato residents to the House of Representative for the removal of the Resident Magistrate of this district, H. W. Northcroft, Esq., take the earliest possible opportunity, by public notice convened, to express their entire and unqualified dissent from the allegations made against the said 11. W, Northcroft in the aforesaid petition." No. 2. — Moved by Cr. Peat, nnd seconded by Cr. Coehrane. "That during the period Mr Northcroft has been Resident Magistrate of Upper Waikato, his demeanour on the bench has not been in the opinion of this council such as should forfeit in any degree the respects and confidence of suitors or of the general public. On the contrary, he has brought to the hearing of cases in which he has been called upon to adjudicate a careful, unbiassed and painstaking consideration, dealing out equal justice alike to rich and poor." No. 3.— Moved by Cr. Bradley, and seconded by Gr. McDonald, ! " That under these circumstances, and for the reason that the contents of the petition aforesaid were studiedly kept from those unwilling to sign it, this council respectfully hopes that the House of Representatives now in Parliament assembled will defer any further action on the petition until such reasonable time as may be needed to obtain a counter expression of public opinion from the settlers generally of the district." No. 4. — Moved by Cr. Tippen, and ■ seconded by Cr. Lovett, ' " That a copy of these resolutions be telegraphed by the clerk to the members for Waipa and Waikato, with a request that they may be submitted without delay to the Government for the information aud consideration of Parliament. The Town Clerk, in accordance with the instructions contained in the last resolution, telegraphed the whole to Messrs Whitaker and Whyte last night.
