RAILWAY MANAGEMENT.
TO TUB KDITOR. Sin, — In yonr sub leader of last Thursday you say, '• We find that in the great majority ot cases the person aggrieved contents himself with growling at the department in private or, it may be, writing to the newspapers." No doubt ifc is true 'in some eases, but; in others not. By applying to head-quarters I have had as much as Gs 4d refunded to me in one week, being ovci charges on two consignments. But a fortnight ago I received two cases of oranges, weighing one cwt. Fmit being under class C, the freight should have been 2s 6d, but I was chained ss. On enquiry I am told that they were left at the parcel oilice instead of the goods shed. That excuse is bad enough, but the parcel rate to Hamilton is 3s for one cwt, and if this happens to be in two parcels of oGlbs each, the charge is 2s 6d for each parcel, in other words, forty boxes of oranges, which would cost 2is *4d if left at the goods shed, cost exactly £5 ; because by accident or otherwise the carter leaves them at the parcel office. Had the two cases been lashed togpther, making them a trifle moie awkward to handle, they would have been only charged 3s. The system is most unjust. If you receive seven parcels of one pound esich, and the consignor neglects to tie them together," you are charged 8s 9d, whilst if they are tied together you are only charged Is 3d. Is that justice ? Any parcel under two pounds weight will go by post from one end of the colony to the other less than by rail from Auckland to Hamilton. Hoping this will save others from being victimibed, — I am, &c, P. Le Qousne. Kirikiriroa, 13th July, 1883.
